What Relaxed, Boxy, and Oversized Actually Mean
FIT

Same size label, three different fits: the ease is the difference.
Fit names get thrown around as if they were moods, but relaxed, boxy, and oversized describe measurable, deliberate differences in how a garment is built. Knowing what each one means makes online sizing far less of a guessing game.
It All Comes Down to Ease
Ease is the space between your body and the fabric. Every fit name is really a statement about how much ease the pattern carries and where it puts it. Once you read fit names as ease descriptions, sizing information starts making sense.
Relaxed
A relaxed fit carries a moderate amount of ease throughout, with the shoulder seam sitting at or just past the natural shoulder. It is the everyday default: room to move, without changing the garment's basic proportions.
Boxy
A boxy fit widens the body and shortens the length, building a squarer frame. The shoulder seam drops slightly, and the hem often lands higher than expected. That shorter length is the detail to check, especially if you are tall or prefer covering the waistband.
Oversized
Oversized is a designed scale, not a sizing accident. The shoulders drop well off the natural line and the ease is generous everywhere, on purpose. Sizing down to tame it usually backfires: the shoulders land in the wrong place and the whole intent collapses. If the volume worries you, check the length measurement instead of dropping a size.
When in Doubt, Stay Your Size
Designers build the intent into the pattern, so the named fit already accounts for the room you are seeing in the photos. Trust the fit name, read the size guide on the item, and stay with your usual size unless the guide says otherwise.
